How to Write a Press Release

Writing an effective press release can be a great way to increase awareness about a product, event, service, website, and more. A great press release should contain the following items:

HEADLINE

The Headline or Title of the press release should give the reader an idea of what to expect from the press release. Keep in mind search engines often index exactly what you have put in the headline so include your keywords in the title. The headline should be written so that it catches the eyes of journalists. Identify a unique feature about your service, product, or website and then write about how it will impact your readers.

DATELINE

The Dateline contains the press release date and the city where the press release originated from.

SUMMARY

Again, a very important part of the press release, the Summary should give the reader a “taste” of what is contained in the press release leaving the reader with an urge to read more.

INTRODUCTION and BODY

The Introduction is the first paragraph in the body of the press release. This introduction generally gives the who, what, when, where and why. The body comes after the introduction and gives further explanation, stats, background and other details relevant to the news.

ABOUT or BOILERPLATE

The About section or Boilerplate section is used to give a summary of the company the release is written about.

MEDIA CONTACT INFORMATION

Probably one of the most important parts and often over-looked sections of the release, the Media Contact Information area is where you tell your readers how to contact you. Include your address, phone number(s), URL, email and any other contact information you feel would benefit the reader.
